Good Monday Morning FMU Family!
As always, great things are happening on the campus of Florida Memorial University…
Florida Memorial University was well represented by its student leaders at the NASAP Conference! Special thanks to our SGA President, Ms. Nicole Collins, Miss FMU, NaTasha K. James, Mr. FMU, Christopher Austin, and SGA Vice-President, Mr. Siyaka Yakubu.
From June 3-5, Ronekqia Williams represented FMU at the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) 2016 Leadership Rally. This event is the foundation of a PRSSA leader’s successful term — a weekend of leadership training, networking and fun held each summer in Scottsdale, Arizona and designed exclusively for incoming Chapter presidents. Ronekqia’s trip was sponsored by Project Protect.
Immediate PRSSA Past President Laura Daronatsy, FMU’s Ronekqia Williams and PRSSA National President Emma Finkbeiner
Carolina Fernandez, FMU alumna – graduate of the Communications/PR program wins an Emmy!
Congratulations to Mary Angie Salva-Ramirez (who Carolina credits with her success)! Your FMU Family is proud of you!
Special thanks to Dr. William Hobbs for engaging the youth at the AKA Career Day. He emphasized smart choices in high-yielding majors and the importance of HBCU’s, Florida Memorial University in particular.
Dr. Hobbs also engaged young boys at Silver Lakes Elementary, along with judges, police officers, news anchors, all who are men. He discussed how difficult it can be for a boy to value his own perspective when his class is majority female, his teacher is a woman, as is the guidance counselor, assistant principal and principle (and security guard).

FMU Hires Florentino Burgos as New Baseball Coach
Florida Memorial University Director of Athletics Robert Smith has completed the search for a new Men’s Baseball coach at FMU with the hiring of Florentino Burgos to lead the Lions into the 2017 season and beyond.
Burgos most recently served as the head coach at Hialeah Gardens Senior High School for the past eight years. He was responsible for evaluating players, practice planning and managing the team. In addition, Burgos owns and operates Tropics Baseball, which organizes fall baseball leagues. “We are excited to bring Coach Burgos on board to lead our Lions baseball program. Burgos is widely known and respected in the baseball community. His energy and enthusiasm mixed with his focus on player development will help elevate our program to the next level,” Smith said.
Burgos is a native of Miami Dade County and played collegiately at Florida International University. Following his collegiate career, he was signed by the Kalamazoo Kings. He later returned to South Florida, where he was the head coach at North Miami Beach Senior High and RBI (Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities). As a collegiate baseball player, Burgos was an All-Regional Team selection and NCAA D1 Regional Champion. Burgos inherits a program that returns the majority of its players. He and the Lions will open play in February of 2017.
Some achievements are so nice, I have to publish them twice!
