Good Monday Morning FMU Family!
As always, great things are happening on the campus of Florida Memorial University…
Congratulations to Dr. Dimitri Tamalis and Dr. Ayivi Huisso, on receiving a scholarship grant award in the amount of $200,000 to provide support for “Assistance in N.U.C.L.E.A.R (Nuclear Undergraduate Collegiate Lions in Education & Research”! Thank you for your ongoing efforts to provide support to deserving FMU Student Scholars!
Eighty (80) HBCU students gathered at the Sheraton Atlanta Hotel through the Thurgood Marshall College Fund at the first OFC Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program. Two out of those eighty (80) students were Florida Memorial University’s very own Junior Class President Shonte Deveaux and Junior Class Queen Jonnell Emmanuel. Both Deveaux and Emmanuel were assigned to the Hackathon Track where they were given the opportunity to learn how to use Swift code (a new programming language). Once learning the fundamentals of swift, all of the participating students competed for less than seventy-two (72) hours to create an app demo or a business plan to pitch to a judging panel.
“I really appreciated the Thurgood Marshal College foundation and OFC for giving me the opportunity to learn swift and encouraging students like myself to be entrepreneurs. This experience was a very enjoyable one, I was able to meet business owners, people in the tech field and students from different backgrounds. Hopefully I am fortunate to attend again next year with more of my Florida Memorial peers.” -Jonnell
“This Thurgood Marshall College Fund OFC I & E program was an exceptional learning opportunity. It was great to meet people of color who are succeeding in the tech industry and making time to give back to the black community. I am looking forward to participating in more events like this especially after my partner from Morehouse College and I placed fourth. I plan on using the resources that the Thurgood Marshall College fund provided us with to continue improving my coding skills.” –Shonte
Dr. Rose Stiffin has been invited to present her research on cancer drug development in Barcelona, Spain. The abstract was accepted for Session 501: Anti-cancer Drug Delivery and Cancer Drug Designing, Optimization. Congratulations to Dr. Stiffin for this recognition of her scholarship. Your FMU Family is Lion Proud!
Kudos to Mr. Marquis McGriff on an incredibly productive summer. He served as a panelist at the AYEL Summer Institute, an opportunity afforded to him right after the NBCA Lecture Series at Florida Memorial. Just last week, he was in New Orleans, Louisiana as a Walmart Visiting Scholar at the ESSENCE Festival! Marquis is an excellent ambassador for FMU and concrete proof that opportunities about for students who aggressively seek them!
Congratulations to the newest Miami Dolphins cheerleader – FMU Alum, Kiana Haywood (COM-Public Relations).
FMU salutes Dr. Thomas Snowden on his selection as the Region 1 Representative for the Florida Statewide Organization of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Dr. Snowden is a lifetime member and is currently active with Sigma Alpha Chapter in Miami Gardens, Florida. Kudos to you!
